The challenge also prompted an appearance of jokes and comedy sketches mocking its concept. On December 27th, YouTube channel Gravity1media posted a challenge compilation (shown below, right).Īs the challenge rose in popularity, recordings of incidents involving blindfolded participants emerged online. A video posted by YouTuber Morgan Adams on December 30th, 2018, in which she spent 24 hours blindfolded, gained 2.1 million views within five days (shown below, left). Starting December 24th, 2018, videos in which participants attempted to perform everyday tasks while blindfolded began appearing on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. On the next day, the photograph was circulated heavily across social networks, with the hashtag appearing in numerous posts. In the post, the hashtag #BirdBoxChallenge was used. On December 23rd, 2018, Facebook user Lamborghini Law posted a photograph of himself holding hands with two children, all blindfolded. ![]() In the following days, several other streamers reported receiving similar challenges from Netflix. On December 6th, 2018, Twitch streamer geekgg tweeted about being challenged by Netflix ANZ Twitter to take part in the #BirdBoxChallenge by attempting to survive a Crash Bandicoot level while wearing a blindfold (shown below, left). The plot of the film follows a woman, played by Sandra Bullock, and her two children, who must make it through a forest and a river while wearing blindfolds. In other words, don't let watching the movie Bird Box or the Bird Box Challenge lead you to do something that may kill yourself.On December 21st, 2018, Netflix-produced film Bird Box premiered on the platform following a brief theatrical run. Most of all, don't try something potentially dangerous in an effort to have your video go viral. If you happen to bump into or hit anything, take time to double-check and make sure you didn't really hurt yourself. Proceed slowly and carefully because it takes time for your other senses to become accustomed and compensate. Pay attention to any usual feelings that you may develop such as dizziness, lightheadedness, or even hallucinations, which studies have shown may occur. Make sure you get proper assistance and instructions. Remove any potentially dangerous obstacles. Don't underestimate how disorienting wearing a blindfold can be. If you ever choose to wear a blindfold, listen to the warnings about being careful. This also can demonstrate how much you depend appropriately and inappropriately on visual cues to make assumptions and decisions every day and how underdeveloped your other senses such as listening may be. When you are not wearing the blindfold, you have to be able to communicate instructions effectively without relying on visual cues. When you are wearing the blindfold, you have to learn how to listen, follow instructions, and trust others to steer you properly. This may include picking up different items and moving and organizing them in different ways. Instead, the thought is that wearing a blindfold may help enhance and appreciate the use of other senses and non-visual communication.įor example, a leadership and team building game called "blindfold pickup" entails blindfolding one person at a time and having others guide the person to perform different tasks without touching him or her. ![]() That would be a strange way to spice up romance. In these cases, the purpose of blindfolding is not to watch someone stumble around and into things. In fact, some people have recommended trying blindfolds in places ranging from the boardroom, for leadership and team building exercises, to the bedroom, for bonding and maybe a little excitement, a la the movie Basic Instinct.
